Volunteer for Growing Room
Deadline: Please sign up as soon as you can. Applications accepted on a rolling basis until January 21st, 2019.
All experience and skill levels are welcome! Shifts are flexible, happening throughout the day/evening on weekends and during weekday afternoons/evenings. There will be an orientation and training session on Saturday, February 23rd. Please save the date.
We’re recruiting for a number of general volunteer positions, including pre-festival volunteers (for late February or early March), event and venue assistants, active listeners, and drivers (expenses reimbursed). Detailed job descriptions here: http://bit.do/volunteerpositions.
If you have specialized experience, we’re also hiring for venue managers (returning volunteers or Room collective members preferred, honorarium available), photographers (honorarium available), and ASL interpreters (paid role). These roles have a more complex application process, and you will receive an email with more details after you apply.
Awesome volunteer perks include:
- A volunteer t-shirt, one year subscription to Room, and free entry to festival events that you’re volunteering for
- The chance to meet other awesome people like fellow volunteers, Growing Room staff, Room Magazine collective members, and festival authors
- Contribute to the running of a feminist literary festival and make a difference
- See how a large literary festival is run, with the chance to possibly become more involved with Room Magazine in the future
- Invite to a post-festival volunteer party with Growing Room staff
- A volunteer reference letter upon request
The volunteer application process has two steps. First, please fill in this volunteer sign-up form as soon as possible, by Jan 21st at the latest: http://bit.do/growingroom.
Once you apply, you will receive an email with follow up details, including a link to sign-up for volunteer shifts. We hope to have all volunteers scheduled by Feb 1st.
For any questions, please email Yilin Wang, Volunteer Coordinator, at volunteer [at] roommagazine [dot] com and she will get back to you. If you would like to receive updates about volunteering at Growing Room, please sign up for our volunteers email list below.
Other Ways to Support the Festival
Make a donation when you register. The majority of panels and readings at Growing Room are by-donation or free to attend. By choosing to donate when you register, you are helping us secure the future of the festival—helping us to reimburse authors fairly, bring in writers from out of town, and cover venue and staffing costs while keeping the festival financially and physically accessible. If you donate $40 or more when you register for your event, you will receive a one-year subscription to Room Magazine, starting with our June 2019 issue. Not sure if you want to donate? Register for free and you’ll have the opportunity to donate to Room or buy a subscription after each of your events.
Subscribe. Subscribe to receive Room, Canada’s oldest feminist literary journal in your mailbox each quarter! Each beautiful issue includes fiction, poetry, essays, art, interviews, and reviews from emerging and established women (cis and trans), trans men, Two-Spirit, and non-binary writers. Learn more at roommagazine.com/subscribe or visit one of our tables after your event.
Check out one of our book sales tables. Books by festival authors, Room merchandise, back issues, subscriptions, and more will be available for sale at merchandise tables at each venue after your event.
On behalf of Room, thank you for your ongoing support. We wouldn’t be here without readers like you.
We accept pitches from publishers and agents for authors to consider in our programming. Email Chelene Knight (managingeditor [at] roommagazine [dot] com) if you would like to propose an author for the 2019 festival.
What does a successful Growing Room pitch look like? Tell us why you think your author would be a great fit for our festival. Present us with a few examples of panel themes that you think 1) have not been done before and 2) will showcase your author’s craft and contribution to the community.
Growing Room is put together by a different diverse programming team every year. We sit down in person to discuss, research, and put together a unique program over a period of four months. We would love to take your pitches to the programming table!
Thank you for your interest! We are no longer accepting pitches for Growing Room 2019. We will accept pitches for Growing Room 2020 starting in the summer of 2019.
