Full Accessibility Audit of The Fox Cabaret

This audit was done by Heather McCain at Creating Accessible Neighbourhoods.

Description

The route of closest bus stop, Southbound Main at 8th Avenue, is #3.

Accessible stop with a concrete pad between road and sidewalk.

There is No Designated Accessible Parking

There is street parking in the neighbourhood.

Curb ramps are stable and firm.

The ramp nearest to the Fox Cabaret entrance is not lined up with the crosswalk or curb cut on the opposite side of the street.

Pedestrian crossing equipped with traffic control signals.

Exterior routes are stable and firm, produce minimal glare, and are not heavily patterned.

The exterior route sidewalks are in good condition, no roots, minimal cracks, tripping hazards.

Have clear width of at least 1600 mm or where adjacent to curb ramp, at least 1350mm.

Street furniture not obstruct any part of an accessible route or create hazards.

Landscaping does not create protruding objects that not create a hazard or reduce accessibility.

There is a lip that is higher than accessible standards on the exterior route just outside the entrance of the Fox Cabaret.

Location does not have tactile or Braille features.

Entrance door is not an accessible width. The second door can be opened to expand door width. Volunteers will be at doors to assist with opening both doors.

Accessible route the same route used by all (universal).

Overall space is easy to understand. Wayfinding is somewhat intuitive; the accessible washroom is not easy to locate without signage.

Fluorescent lighting is used.

Wifi is used .

The washrooms with stalls do not have accessible entrances, floor area, or stalls.

The signage for the universal washroom is very hard to see. The door is black and they symbol is red. There is no tactile or Braille features.

The chairs are at an accessible height. They are cushioned and have no arms.

Event organizers and volunteers will be present and are willing to assist event participants.

Event volunteers have received anti-oppression training that included disability awareness information.

Event staff, volunteers, and organizers will use microphones when talking to crowd.

Guide and service dogs are welcome.

Event staff, volunteers, and organizers are trained in how to approach people with service animals.

There is no easy access to grass for working dogs to relieve themselves, there are trees with gravel on exterior route.

Scent-reduced soap will be provided at venues.

Shared spaces will be scent-reduced.

ATM has visual cues as well as tactile cues on non-numbered keys.

The headphone jack for audible instructions and cues is plugged.

Bus Stop

The signage does not provide information visually or in braille or raised characters or by user or proximity-actuated audible signals.

There is an accessible route from the transit stop to the entrance

The route is the shortest and most direct.

Pedestrian Crossing

Curb ramps are stable and firm.

Curb ramp design shall provide for appropriate drainage so that water will not accumulate on the path of travel.

There shall be a turning space at least 1350 x 1350 mm at the top of a curb ramp level with the pedestrian route.

The ramp nearest to the Fox Cabaret entrance is not lined up with the crosswalk or curb cut on the opposite side of the street.

Curb ramps do not have tactile attention indicators.

Pedestrian crossing equipped with traffic control signals.

Pedestrian traffic lights do not have clearly audible signals.

The time interval for crossing is an approximate 17 seconds.

Exterior Routes

Exterior routes are stable and firm, produce minimal glare, and are not heavily patterned.

The exterior route sidewalks are in good condition, no roots, minimal cracks, tripping hazards.

Have clear width of at least 1600 mm or where adjacent to curb ramp, at least 1350mm.

There is a lip that is higher than accessible standards on the exterior route just outside the entrance of the Fox Cabaret.

Rest Areas

Three is one transit bench with a back and seat separators located adjacent to accessible route.

The bench has a level and firm surface.

The bench has an adjacent level and firm area at least 850 x 1350 mm that is not part of the route of travel.

The transit bench is shaded by awning.

Street Furniture

Street furniturenot obstruct any part of an accessible route or create hazards.

Where pedestrian use or interaction is intended, be adjacent or connected to the accessible pedestrian route.

It is consistently located on one or both sides of an accessible route.

It does not reduce the clear width of the accessible route.

It does not have a surface texture-and-colour-contrasted with the surrounding area.

Waste Receptacles

Are located adjacent or connected to accessible route.

Are securely fastened to ground.

Have the opening or lid not higher than 1060 mm from the ground.

Have a clear ground area of at least 800 x 1350 mm at the opening or lid.

Are cane-detectable to the ground (685 mm).

Are not colour-contrasted with the surroundings.

Landscaping

Landscaping does not create protruding objects that not create a hazard or reduce accessibility.

Edges of planting beds adjacent to accessible routes are not clearly defined by texture and colour-contrast from their surroundings.

Vegetation adjacent to accessible route has no thorns or sharp edges.

Landscaping has no planting that can drop large seed-pods overhanging or close-by or that is  poisonous.

Tree branches and/or shrubs do not protrude or create a hazard.

Entrance door is not an accessible width. The second door can be opened to expand door width. Volunteers will be at doors to assist with opening both doors.

Level manoeuvring area on the push and pull sides of a door

Operating devices are operable with closed fist or another method of operation that does not require tight grasping, pinching or twisting of wrist.  

Control devices do not have tactile and/or auditory information for function, position, and confirmation of activation.

Operating controls are mounted between 900-11100mm from the floor.

Circulation

Accessible route the same route used by all (universal).

Route hazard and barrier free.

Needs clear signs to accessible key features, like washroom.

Lighting ranges from adequate to dark.

Interior Stairs

There are stairs to the balcony.

Stairs are of uniform height and depth.

Risers are not more than 180mm high.

Treads are less than the accessible standard.

Treads are slip resistant.

There are no open risers.

There is a horizontal strip at the edge of the tread is colour-contrasted with the tread and riser and which extends the full width of the tread.

The stairway is dark.

On the landing at the top of the stairs, red lights are used.

Interior Stair Handrails

Handrails are provided for stairs

Handrails are only installed on one side of the stairs.

Handrails are strong and not wobbly.

Handrails are of uniform and accessible height.

At the top of the stairs, the handrail extends at least 300 mm parallel to the floor surface.

Handrail is free of any sharp or abrasive elements and has a continuous gripping surface, without obstructions that interrupt a hand hold.

Washrooms with Stalls

The washrooms with stalls do not have accessible entrances, floor area, or stalls.

If the washroom is not accessible, signage indicates the location of the nearest accessible washroom.

Washrooms will be all-genders for the duration of Growing Room

There is no change table.

Washroom #2 Urinal

The urinal in washroom #2 washroom is not at an accessible height.

It is not adjacent to an accessible route.

It is not unobstructed by floor level changes or privacy screens.

It has automatically operated flush controls.

There are no urinal grab bars.

There is no centreline indicator.

Universal Washrooms

The signage for the universal washroom is very hard to see. The door is black and they symbol is red. There is no tactile or Braille features.

A door to a universal washroom does have a clear opening width of a doorway shall be at least 850 mm.

Does not have a locking mechanism on the inside that is operable with one hand, using a closed fist position or another method of operation that does not require tight grasping, pinching, or twisting of the wrist.

The universal washroom does not have a clear, accessible space that meets the standards.

The toilet is not a spring-activated seat.

Grab bar is slip-resistant, securely attached, and does not rotate within their fittings.

Grab bar + adjacent surfaces shall be free of any sharp or abrasive elements

Grab bar on side but not at back.

Flush controls are hand-operated by a device that does not require tight grasping, pinching, or twisting of the wrist.

Toilet paper dispenser is too high.

The universal washroom is not equipped with an emergency call system that can be actuated by control located inside the washroom, which will activate audible and visual signal devices inside and outside of the washroom.

There is no shelf or counter.

There is no coat hook.

The sink is at an accessible height.

The knee clearance at the front of lavatories meets accessibility standards.

Lavatories feature faucets that are operable using one hand without tight grasping, pinching or twisting of the wrist.

Faucets do not require the application of continuous force to maintain water flow.

The towel dispenser and/or or hand-dryer is just a bit higher than the accessibility standard.

Event Seating

Viewing space for a person using a wheeled mobility device shall have a clear floor area that is at least 850 × 1200 mm.

Viewing space is on a clear and level surface.

The viewing space for a person using a wheeled mobility device is an integral part of the seating plan

Viewing spaces for a person using a wheeled mobility device is dispersed throughout the seating area and is located adjacent to other seating

A viewing space for a person using a wheeled mobility device does provide line of sight that are comparable to those for all viewing positions

Viewing spaces are not reduced or obstructed by standing members of the audience

Viewing spaces for people with wheeled mobility devices are situated, as part of the designated seating plan, to provide a choice of viewing location and a clear view of the event taking place.

A seating space for persons using a wheeled mobility device, such as that provided at counters, tables, or work surfaces, shall have a clear floor area not less than 800 x 1350 mm and adequate manoeuvring space to approach it.

Booths are at an accessible height but require a step up.

Tables are not at an accessible height; they are too high.

The chairs are at an accessible height. They are cushioned and have no arms.

A table or counter surface shall be at a height between 730 – 860 mm from the floor.

Seating is stable.

Facility

Overall space is easy to understand. Wayfinding is somewhat intuitive; the accessible washroom is not easy to locate without signage.

No excessive noise that affects ability to enjoy facility.

Fluorescent lighting is used.

Second floor has red lighting that is extremely hard to see in.

Wifi is used .

Venue is an art studio so there may be smells from artists working with clay, paints, and other art materials.
